On Sunday last, the first training session for Clontarf Bulls got underway on the new all-weather pitch at Castle Avenue.
Nine children with intellectual additional needs began their rugby careers with a 45 minute non-contact rugby session. It was led by a group of rugby coaches and volunteers with a particular interest in promoting the abilities of these children and rightfully including them in our Club. Many of their brothers and sisters play rugby, now these children have their own team!
The drills, games and training were pre-planned and aimed at being easy to follow and enjoyable for players and coaches. Each participant was provided with 1 to 1 coaching throughout the session. Parental attendance on the side line gave the children additional re-assurance and confidence. The benefits include an appreciation of the game of rugby, improving ball handling skills at whatever level the child is at, increasing physical strength and spatial awareness, gaining confidence to make new friends, and getting some fresh air on a regular basis. A rugby ball was provided for each player to take home to celebrate the launch.
The official season will kick off in September 2016. Any parents of a school going child with intellectual special needs interested in getting their child involved, please contact the Club Office on 01 833 6214 for an application form.
