J1 League – Clontarf 39 Old Wesley 5
by Mark Byrnes
Clontarf are still unbeaten in the Leinster J1 league after a resounding win over Old Wesley at Castle Avenue on Monday night.
Played in tricky underfoot conditions, Clontarf struggled in the opening 20 minutes as pressure came from the away side and Wesley will be disappointed they didn’t put points on the board after missing two kicks at goal.
Attacking Castle Avenue, Clontarf opened the scoring from scrum-half Ronan O’Driscoll with a penalty making amends for an earlier miss.
The first try of the match came from the impressive Ross McAuley after an Old Wesley clearance was charged down.
The lead was further increased shortly before the interval with winger Sean McKay touching down and the conversion left it 15-0 at half time.
The match was effectively over as a contest after 65 minutes when Clontarf had two more tries on the board, thus securing another bonus point.
Clontarf had lost Martin Garvey and Conor O’Keefe to the sin bin earlier in the match but it did little to disrupt the team who ran the ball at will.
A consolation try two minutes from time gave Old Wesley little cheer as Clontarf ran in late tries from James Hart and Glen Preedy to put a further gloss on another fine win.
