U21 League Match: Clontarf 72 Old Belvedere 39
by Mark Byrnes
Entertaining from the first whistle – the winter sun was shining but it was raining tries at Castle Ave in a remarkable encounter. Clontarf began brilliantly and had scored 4 tries in the opening quarter to lead 28-3.
Old Belvedere’s response was equally as impressive as they turned the lead on its head and went in at half time 34-31 in front.
Half time came at the worst possible time for Old Belvedere as they were well on top, whereas Clontarf needed the break to figure out how things had gone so wrong to so quickly.
Clontarf took to the field a changed side as they attacked the Castle Avenue end.
The lead again changed hands early in the second half before Clontarf ran riot and scored seven tries in the second half – making it 11 in total to cap a truly memorable performance leaving the scoreboard Clontarf 72 Old Belvedere 39
This win together with a fine win over Lansdowne the previous week added to victories over Trinity and UCD earlier in the month put the U/21 in a strong position ahead of the Super 6’s.
